Watch Your Watts: Read Your Meter

How to Read Your Digital Smart Meter

Digital MeterYour MID bill is based on the number of kilowatt-hours (kWh) of power used. A kWh is 1,000 watts of electricity used for one hour. You can see and track how many kilowatts you use hourly, daily, and monthly through MID’s Customer Self-Service portal.

  1. Read the numbers from left to right; write it down from left to right. Every time the number increases, another kWh has been used.
  2. Subtract the last reading you recorded from the current one to get the number of kWh used.
  3. In the illustration, the reading is 05850 kWh. If the previous reading had been 04825 the difference is 1025 kWh used.
