Beware of Scams

Scam Alert

Scammers work year-round to defraud people; some even pretend to be MID representatives. Criminals who impersonate utility employees often threaten to take immediate and drastic action. You can identify scammers by the way they demand payment, including pre-paid debit cards, money orders, and cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin.

What to Do If a Scammer Contacts You

If you suspect a phone call, email, or personal visit is fraudulent, remember:

  • Live representatives from MID do not make outgoing calls to our customers regarding disconnects.
  • MID never requests credit card information over the phone.
  • Never reveal personal information to anyone, including your MID Account information, credit card, ATM or calling card number (or PIN number).
  • MID does not go door-to-door selling solar or energy efficiency programs.
  • If you are unsure if you are speaking to a MID Customer Service representative, call MID at (209) 526-7337 or toll-free at (888) 335-1643.

Anyone who may have given credit card information to someone saying they were from MID or has someone show up to their home or business acting as an MID employee should immediately contact the Modesto Police Department at (209) 552-2470.

MID Employee Onsite? Ask for a Company ID

It is important to note that MID does occasionally send employees to homes and business to replace or read meters. MID employees wear MID khaki shirts and drive white vehicles with a blue MID logo on the side doors. All MID employees also have company-issued photo identification badges.
